KOBBIE MAINOO, who played just 20 minutes for the Three Lions, has already achieved an honor that England great Gary Lineker never had.

This season, the Manchester United prodigy has made an explosive debut, making 20 appearances under Erik ten Hag.

Mainoo was called up to Gareth Southgate’s England team due to his outstanding play.

 

And on Saturday at Wembley, the midfielder’s greatest ambitions came true when he made his debut for his country against Brazil.

 

In the friendly, the Three Lions lost 1-0 despite Mainoo playing 20 minutes.

 

However, the 18-year-old will always remember the event, regardless of the outcome.

Mainoo was also given a legacy cap by England manager Gareth Southgate as a thank you.

 

In 2019, the FA officially adopted the commemorative item to commemorate the 1000th national team game.

 

A legacy cap has been applied to debutants since September 2021.

On Saturday, Alan Shearer, a great of Newcastle, became the most recent England icon to receive one.

 

He scored 30 goals in 63 appearances and is regarded as one of the best attackers in nation history.

In the podcast The Rest Is Football, the former Leicester hero complimented Shearer and said he “didn’t know it was a thing.”

 

He was forced to make fun of his friend’s gift, though, by joking, “We were all at Wembley for the England vs. Brazil game.”

 

“To celebrate Terry Venables’ life, a unique celebration was held, and our very own Alan Shearer even accepted his legacy England cap.

 

“Alan, please explain what that is, as I don’t currently own one. I had no idea that it even existed!

 

“I wasn’t quite sure what it was; I had to do some digging about,” Shearer said.

 

“It is my 1,040th time representing England, and that is the significance of the legacy cap.” I have no idea what the remaining numbers are!

 

“I think they do it in terms of ability, Alan,” quips Lineker.
