Shakur Stevenson surprised many boxing fans by calling Gervonta Davis “a normal person” in a new interview.
The two American lightweights are both currently world champions in the 135lbs weight class.
Tank was effectively upgraded to become a fully recognized WBA world champion when Devin Haney moved up to super lightweight last year.
Meanwhile, Stevenson retained his WBC title in his most recent fight with a victory over Edwin De Los Santos.
However, the contest was so boring that the talented three-weight champion has received a lot of criticism since then.
Many fans believed that Stevenson performed poorly in the match by “running away” from his opponent while defeating him and not stepping up the action for an exciting performance.
When asked about the possibility of a unification between them after his victory earlier this month, Davis replied that they “know how it’s going to go.”
He also expected that Stevenson would employ an unattractive defensive strategy similar to his previous match.
When asked about this by Kevin Iole on Friday, Stevenson replied: “Tank is casual wear, we have to be honest.
“You can be an exceptional boxer but not really have any knowledge about boxing.
“He fought Rolly Romero and Isaac Cruz – when they fought each other, he chose Rolly to win because he was stronger.
“It’s a subjective opinion.
“Gervonta Davis is a good fighter, but he’s a normal person, he just says what normal people say.”
Boxing fans were surprised by this insult, as this is an expression usually only used among fans on social media.
One person wrote: “Dude said he’s a normal person lmao, never heard a fighter call another fighter that.”
And another fan wrote: “Go ahead @ShakurStevenson son. Call him a normal person. Arrow to the heart.”
While a third said: “He’s not wrong, Tank is absolutely convinced Rolly will beat Cruz.”
Another fan commented: “Everyday or not, make sure your Reebok shoes help you run better if you step into the ring with Tank.”
And another fan added: Shakur is a talented but boring fighter. Tank will defeat him.”
Stevenson hopes to change public opinion in his next fight with Artem Harutyunyan on July 6.
