The 23-year-old is close to finalizing a deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars just days after he was cut by the defending Super Bowl champions, NFL Insider Jordan Schultz reported.
This comes after Rees-Zammit appeared in all three of the Chiefs’ preseason games and was used as a running back, wide receiver, and special teamer.
The former rugby star totaled 63 yards on two kick returns, rushed for 22 yards on six attempts, and recorded one reception for three yards.
In January, Rees-Zammit announced he was retiring from rugby union and training for a spot in the NFL.
The 23-year-old joined the NFL through its International Player Pathway Program.
He then signed a contract with the Chiefs in March.
Although he already signed a free agency deal with guaranteed money and a signing bonus he still falls under the umbrella as an international player.
Still being considered an international player is significant because it means he could still be signed to a practice squad as an extra player, bypassing the usual team limits.
In 2024, the NFL revised a rule allowing teams to add a 17th player to the practice squad if they are an international player.
They can use the extra slot for a player from the IPP or keep it for a talent they want to scout.
After being cut by the Chiefs, the loophole allows Rees-Zammit to now possibly develop on the Jaguars practice squad.
This isn’t the first time the Chiefs have dealt with an international pathway player.
Chukwuebuka Godrick, an offensive tackle, joined the Chiefs through the IPP last season.
But his second-year contract for 2024, was upgraded to a standard NFL contract.
Which ended up freeing up a spot on the practice squad for the tackle who now enters his second season with the team..
To qualify as an international player the athlete must be a citizen outside of the United States and Canada.
They must also have had a maximum of two years of US high school experience.
Rees-Zammit has met each of the criteria to qualify as an international player.
The IPP has already allowed 18 international players to live out their dreams and make an NFL roster.
Meanwhile, the Chiefs also made a shocking cut when they released wide receiver Kadarius Toney.
Since being traded to Kansas City from the New York Giants during the 2022 season, Toney has made 20 appearances for the Chiefs.
A highlight from Toney’s time in Kansas City came during their Super Bowl LVII win against the Philadelphia Eagles when he scored a five-yard touchdown to give the Chiefs the lead in the fourth quarter.
Toney was inactive during their most recent Super Bowl triumph against the San Francisco 49ers.
A first-round draft pick in 2021, Toney struggled with drops last season, finishing the year with 169 yards and a touchdown in 13 games.
During this year’s preseason, Toney managed just three receptions for 22 yards while also returning two punts for 23 yards.
