Country music singer-songwriter Jamey Johnson was arrested on November 17, 2024,
in Williamson County, Tennessee, for alleged marijuana possession and speeding.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol reported that Johnson was pulled over for driving 87 mph in a 70 mph zone. During the stop, officers allegedly found several Ziploc bags of marijuana and pre-rolled joints in his vehicle. He was charged with violating a Tennessee law that prohibits possession of between half an ounce and 10 ounces of marijuana, classified as a Class E felony. If convicted, Johnson could face one to six years in prison and fines up to $5,000. Additionally, he was charged with a Class C misdemeanor for speeding, which carries a potential fine of up to $200.
This arrest comes shortly after Johnson released his first album in 14 years, “Midnight Gasoline,” and discussed his struggles with addiction. In a recent interview, he revealed that he had his last drink in September 2011 and quit smoking marijuana in 2015, though he admitted to occasionally using it while writing music. Johnson emphasized that he doesn’t “play games with the alcohol,” acknowledging its destructive impact on his life in the past.
Johnson, 49, is a respected figure in the country music industry, known for collaborations with artists like Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, and George Strait. He is also a member of the Grand Ole Opry. His recent single, “Sober,” reflects his journey toward sobriety and the challenges he’s faced along the way.
As of now, Johnson’s legal proceedings are ongoing, with a court hearing scheduled for February 6, 2025. Representatives for Johnson have not publicly commented on the arrest. Fans and the country music community await further developments, hoping for a positive resolution to the situation.
