Van Nistelrooy received an invitation from an English First Division team, however the 48-year-old former striker’s case is somewhat similar to his former teammate Rooney’s one year ago.
Van Nistelrooy is targeted by Burnley to replace Scott Parker
However, the positive results during his interim period, combined with his impressive achievements while working at PSV, still helped his name attract the attention of many teams, including Burnley.
According to SunSport, the English Championship team is considering the possibility of inviting Van Nistelrooy to become head coach. In fact, Burnley considered Van Nistelrooy and Scott Parker for the “captain” position in the summer of 2024 to replace Vincent Kompany (who moved to Bayern Munich). In the end, they chose Scott Parker, because Van Nistelrooy decided to return to MU as assistant to Erik ten Hag.
Burnley are currently struggling under Scott Parker. Despite an impressive start to the season with two consecutive wins and nine goals, the team has since slumped significantly, winning five, drawing six and losing two, scoring just nine goals in the next 13 games.
Rooney was a “disaster” when he led Birmingham City.
The case of Birmingham City in the 2023/24 season will be an obvious lesson for Burnley. In October 2023, the Birmingham City board appointed a MU legend, Wayne Rooney, to replace coach John Eustace. At that time, the team ranked 6th in the rankings with 18 points/11 matches and was full of hope to join the promotion race.
They quickly regretted this decision. After less than 3 months, Rooney pushed Birmingham City into a serious crisis when they fell to 20th place. After losing 0-3 to Leeds United in January 2024, Birmingham City officially fired Rooney.
After 83 days in the head coach’s chair, the MU legend only achieved a 13.3% win rate in 15 matches, becoming one of the worst managers in the club’s history. Under Rooney, Birmingham City won the fewest points (10 points), lost the most matches (9 matches) and also conceded the most goals (30 goals) in the English First Division.
