New York Yankees reporter Meredith Marakovits believes the team had a great offseason. She had this say about New York’s offseason moves. “I think it’s a better, more well-rounded roster than last year.” That is a disputed point because New York saw Juan Soto spurn them for the cross-town rival New York Mets. Marakovits works in various roles for Yes Network. They broadcast many of New York’s games and have pre and postgame coverage for the ballclub.
A few of the key moves New York made this offseason were trading for Closer Devin Williams, signing First Baseman Paul Goldschmidt, signing Starting Pitcher Max Fried, and acquiring Center Fielder Cody Bellinger. Will Marakovits be proven correct that the New York Yankees roster will be better this season?
New York Yankees Offseason Summary
New York advanced to its first World Series since 2009 but was outclassed by the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games. They did not rest on their laurels following their best season in over a decade. As previously mentioned, the Yankees and General Manager Brian Cashman remade their roster this offseason. To replace Soto, they turned to Bellinger. While not as talented as Soto, Bellinger is a suitable replacement.
To replace First Baseman Anthony Rizzo, they signed former NL MVP Goldschmidt. The pitching staff of New York was where the team experienced the most upheaval. That unit was strong last regular season finishing seventh in ERA, fourth in strikeouts, and fifth in opposing batting average. New York improved an already strong unit by adding Williams and Fried. The Yankees have a starting rotation featuring Gerrit Cole, Fried, and Carlos Rodon.
Final Thoughts
Marakovits has a good point I believe. The biggest loss was Soto, and while it was a costly departure, the New York Yankees got better at the other positions where they experienced departures. They will be a threat again in the American League but must stave off many teams to win the pennant for a second straight year.
