Manchester United are eyeing a new defensive midfielder ahead of the transfer deadline, but there is also a chance they could strengthen in another position.
The Red Devils are in close talks with Panathinaikos over the sale of Facundo Pellistri, while Jadon Sancho’s future is also under threat.
Sancho was left out of the squad for the opening game of the season against Fulham and Juventus have recently made enquiries about his current position.
According to today’s edition of Sport, Juventus star Federico Chiesa has received offers from both United and Chelsea, but he is yet to agree a deal.
The Italian is considering other options and is attracted to the Spanish league.
Barcelona are considering a bid for the Euro 2020 champions, with a new winger seen as a priority. Chiesa could leave the Bianconeri for just £13m.
United’s speculation about Chiesa could be driven by his agent
Chiesa, described by former Italy defender Alessandro Pierini as ‘world class’, is capable of playing on both the right and left flank.
He can also play as a second striker, which has been his regular position over the past year.
Despite his versatility, we doubt United will make an approach. The club have plenty of options in wide attack, although Sancho’s future remains uncertain.
Amad Diallo, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony are all vying for the right-wing spot. Garnacho can also play on the other flank and could provide competition for Marcus Rashford.
With four solid options in the squad, the club do not need another winger. Chiesa can play as a striker, but the former Fiorentina star has lost some of his pace since his serious knee injury.
He has admitted that the setback has slowed him down, personally. With Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund already in the first team, we don’t see United investing in Chiesa.
This speculation could be driven by his agent to push Barcelona into making a quick decision.
