Inter Miami Aims to Make History
Luis Suarez and his teammates hold a significant advantage in the race for the annual MLS Supporters’ Shield championship.
Inter Miami has been in exceptional form this season.
In an MLS season, there are two titles awarded: the MLS Supporters’ Shield, given to the team with the most points (from both Eastern and Western Conferences) after 34 rounds, and the MLS Cup, awarded to the team that wins the playoffs.
After 27 rounds in the 2024 MLS season, Inter Miami leads the Eastern Conference with 59 points, 8 points ahead of second-place Cincinnati. They are also 7 points ahead of the Western Conference leaders, LA Galaxy (with Inter Miami having played one less game).
With just 7 rounds remaining in the regular MLS season, Inter Miami holds a substantial advantage in the race for the MLS Supporters’ Shield. Coach Gerardo Martino has expressed Inter Miami’s ambition to capture both titles.
However, the MLS Supporters’ Shield is the immediate priority for Inter Miami, as winning this title would secure them a spot in the FIFA Club World Cup next summer, right on their home soil.
“Finishing the season with the most points qualifies the team for the CONCACAF Champions League. Additionally, topping the table will allow the team to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup,” Coach Gerardo Martino emphasized the importance of the remainder of the season.
At present, Inter Miami has already secured a spot in the playoffs, as they are 27 points ahead of the teams outside the playoff zone. Nevertheless, David Beckham’s team is determined to perform strongly in the last 7 rounds of the 2024 MLS season.
Coach Martino also confirmed that Messi’s recovery is progressing well, with the Argentine superstar training normally with the team. However, even without Messi over the past two months, Inter Miami has thrived thanks to the strong performances of Sergio Busquets, Luis Suarez, and Jordi Alba.
Last season, Inter Miami struggled terribly, finishing in the bottom half of the Eastern Conference, far from playoff contention. This year, however, they have completely transformed.
