Ice Spice Opens Up About Her Relationship with Nicki Minaj: Mixed Feelings and Leaked Texts.
Ice Spice is shedding light on her relationship with collaborator Nicki Minaj in their joint venture “Barbie World,” and the news is a mix of highs and lows.
In an interview with Rolling Stone published on Thursday (July 25), the Bronx rapper candidly discussed her connection with Nicki Minaj. “We don’t have the closest relationship, you know? But we’re definitely good,” she told RS. “We’re mutual friends. We made a record together. I love us when we’re together. I think the world does too.”
Ice Spice also addressed the leaked text messages from a few months ago, in which she expressed frustration with Minaj over business details regarding their “Barbie World” collaboration.
“I don’t really think she cares about silly stuff like that from a stranger,” the “Munch” rapper said about Minaj. “But what I said in those texts was just in a moment of frustration surrounding contract negotiations. I could have chosen different words. But at the end of the day, no matter how I felt in that moment, [Nicki] is still someone I respect as an artist, and I will always admire everything she’s done for me and the culture.”
The messages first surfaced on May 3 when aspiring singer and rapper Baby Storme posted screenshots of an alleged conversation with the Bronx native. Ice Spice seemed to confirm the authenticity of these messages by addressing them in her Rolling Stone interview.
In the screenshots, a woman purported to be Ice Spice allegedly called Minaj “ungrateful and delusional” and claimed that the Barbie soundtrack project was initially brought to her, after which she approached Minaj for a collaboration because “it’s her brand.”
In another post, Ice Spice allegedly asserted that the “Starships” rapper was “jealous” of her “because I own my masters.”
This isn’t the first time Baby Storme has tried to expose Ice Spice. Previously, she took to X (formerly known as Twitter) on April 27 to further “expose” her former friend.
Alongside pictures and screenshots, she accused the 24-year-old of being a fake friend and a bad person. “This is Cleo,” she wrote alongside a photo of Ice Spice and a girl named Cleopatra. “The girl she chooses to call her ‘best friend in public’ when in reality, behind the scenes, it’s me.
“Cleo and her aren’t really best friends. Isis always hated Cleo. But she used her so she could appear ‘closer to Black people.’ She also lied about being Nigerian. She stole that from me.”
Ice Spice’s revelations about her relationship with Nicki Minaj and the fallout from leaked texts have created a buzz in the hip-hop community. As fans and critics alike dissect her comments, it’s clear that the dynamics between these two artists are complex.
