Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has recorded some huge knockout victories in his career.
The Mexican superstar famously pulled off a highlight-reel KO against James Kirkland back in 2015, whilst also claiming one punch stoppage victories against the likes of Sergey Kovalev and Amir Khan.
That power seems to have eluded Canelo in recent fights though, with his past five victories all coming via unanimous decision, the most recent of which against Edgar Berlanga in September.
One of his long-term rivals has now weighed in on that power, and that is former unified world champion Gennady Golovkin.
Canelo and Golovkin met three times, with the first fight controversially being ruled a draw, while Alvarez then narrowly came out on top in the next and then convincingly winning the last.
A memorable moment came in the first bout between the two fighters, where Canelo landed a huge right hand in round nine which caught Golovkin flush.
‘GGG’ however has played down the power of his opponent, telling DAZN that when that punch landed it felt more like a ‘slap’.
“I remember that punch, I let it get through. I don’t know what to call it, it wasn’t hard, it felt kind of like a slap I guess. A slap or a sliding punch. Well, it didn’t do too much.”
Alvarez is expected to return to the ring in May 2025, with the likes of Dmitry Bivol and Terence Crawford named as potential opponents, whilst Golovkin still hasn’t ruled out a ring return having been out of action for over two years.
