In Marseille’s 5-0 win over Montpellier, Mason Greenwood scored again.
Greenwood permanently moved to France from Manchester United for £30 million in the summer.
He scored five goals in his first three games for the team, but then he didn’t score or set up a goal for four games in a row.
The 23-year-old stopped his short goal drought with a stunning strike as Marseille beat Montpellier 4-0 away from home to get back on track.
Greenwood sped past a defender with step-overs and then hit the goalie with a powerful shot with his right foot just before the hour mark. Roberto De Zerbi’s team was ahead 3-0.
The other goals for Marseille came from Elye Wahi, Amine Harit, Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg, and Luis Henrique. Marseille is still in third place in the table.
There were rumors that Greenwood wanted to meet with Thomas Tuchel and the Football Association to talk about a way to get back into the England national team. This is his new goal.
“He is determined to be a part of Tuchel’s regime to make the 2026 World Cup,” The Sun said. “He will switch allegiance to Jamaica if he is barred.”
The striker from Bradford can play for the Caribbean country because his paternal grandparents are from there.
“Mason knows his chances of playing for England again are very slim,” a source told The Sun. He wants to know what the FA and Tuchel think, though, now that he is in charge.
He really wants to play at the top level, which means the World Cup.
“If England doesn’t want him, he’ll go to Jamaica and try to make it to the 2026 World Cup that way.”
Gareth Southgate never said Greenwood couldn’t come back, but he did say that including him was not a “consideration” while he was in court.
His only game was against Iceland in September 2020, but he and Phil Foden were sent home from camp after a video showed them taking two women back to the team hotel against Covid-19 rules.
