Diddy nearly came to blows with Will Smith after he and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, “made a pass” at his then-girlfriend, Jennifer Lopez, according to the Bad Boy mogul’s former bodyguard, Gene Deal.
Deal was asked about the alleged incident in an interview with The Art of Dialogue, where he recalled Puff’s vehement reaction after he suspected the Men In Black star and his actress wife were trying to lure J.Lo into the bedroom.
“We were at a birthday party that I think Matt Damon was having for Ben Affleck. It was just a little get-together at the Four Seasons,” Deal recalls. “Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez, Puff, Will Smith and Jada were sitting on one side of the room.
“[Puff] stood up. And when he stood up, he walked over and did his arms in a certain way, like [crossed them]. I walked up to him and he was like, ‘Yo, I think Will and Jada are trying to get Jennifer back. I want you to stay close to me because I’m gonna take her out.'”
Gene Deal laughed as he recalled thinking Will Smith would probably “beat up” Diddy, though he acknowledged his former employer could “come undone.”
The former bodyguard also recalls strategically positioning himself far enough away from Puff that if he had to take out Will, “I could move slowly enough that Will could probably land two or three punches back.”
“It was funny,” he concluded with a laugh. “He thought Jada and Will were being too strong on Jennifer, that they were coming on to her.”
It’s unclear exactly when the alleged incident occurred, but Diddy and Jennifer Lopez dated between late 1999 and early 2001 after meeting on the set of a music video.
Although he apparently wanted to hit Will Smith, Diddy reportedly played peacemaker last year when the former Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars for making fun of Jada Pinkett’s hair loss.
Page Six reported at the time that Puff “spoke to [Smith and Rock] separately” following the incident, which made headlines around the world.
However, he denied reports that he told a reporter at an Oscars after -party that the couple had quickly ended their feud.
“I never confirmed that they reconciled,” Diddy told TMZ. “I said, ‘As brothers, they’re going to get through this, and let’s move forward with love.'”
Gene Deal’s comments come after several explosive revelations about Will Smith and Jada Pinkett’s marriage. During an interview with Today earlier this month, Jada revealed that she and Will have been secretly separated since 2016, though they are not technically divorced.
In a separate interview with PEOPLE, the 52-year-old actress denied that their marriage was an open relationship, despite her highly publicized affair with R&B singer August Alsina.
“I think what got confusing is that over time, there were different stages in my marriage where Will and I decided that we weren’t together,” she said. “We didn’t tell the public that I was actually considering divorce, separating.
“There were a lot of these times where we were living our lives apart. So I think that’s when people might have thought, ‘Oh, they must have an open relationship.’”
