More than three months have passed since the Los Angeles Dodgers took down the New York Yankees in five games to win the World Series, and a guy who’s not even on the Dodgers roster anymore is still living rent-free in Aaron Boone’s head.
On the eve of pitchers and catchers reporting to spring training, the unofficial start of a new season, the Yankees skipper was still stuck in the past during his Tuesday media availability in Tampa. Reflecting on what might have been, Boone said he hoped his team would “handle things with a little more class” if they had been the ones to capture their first World Series title since 2009.
“The reality is we didn’t play our best in the series and they won, so they had that right to say whatever,” Boone said (via Jeff Passan of ESPN). “Hopefully, we’re in that position next year and handle things with a little more class. But the reality is it’s a great team, it’s a great organization with a lot of great people that I happen to know and respect, too. So a few people sounding off isn’t necessarily how I would want to draw it up.”
Aaron Boone takes shot at Dodgers again for Yankees trash talk after World Series
Boone was referring, of course, to Dodgers utility man Chris Taylor and former reliever Joe Kelly calling out the Yankees’ sloppy defense that ultimately became their undoing in the World Series. On his own podcast, Kelly called the Yankees’ poor defense and baserunning “well-known,” while Taylor said the Yankees “s— down their leg” on teammate Mookie Betts’ podcast. Kelly also took a shot at the Yankees on the “Baseball Isn’t Boring” podcast, calling them one of the worst playoff teams in 2024.
If this really is just a case of “a few people sounding off,” then why would Boone even bring it up and continue to give it more air time months after the fact? If he gets that spun up about a little harmless trash talk – especially from a guy who didn’t even pitch for the Dodgers in the 2024 World Series – then perhaps he should shift his focus inward to determine why the Yankees lost the series.
