The initial results of Liam Payne’s autopsy have been revealed following his heartbreaking death in Argentina yesterday (16 October).

Police in the Argentinian capital of Buenos Aries confirmed that Payne, 31, had passed away following a fall from a third-floor balcony of the Casa Sur Hotel and sustaining injuries ‘not compatible’ with life.

Authorities were alerted to the case after receiving information of a man at the hotel who was acting aggressive and ‘could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol’.

Alberto Crescenti, the head of the state emergency medical system, has since confirmed the singer had died at the scene after falling around 40 metres from the balcony.

Payne’s body was subsequently transported to a morgue in the city centre where two forensic pathologists began the autopsy, with the preliminary results confirming the singer had died from ‘internal and external haemorrhaging’ sustained from the fall, per reports from Marca and The Mirror.

It is also understood that further toxicology tests are currently ongoing, which will determine whether or not Payne had taken any substances in the hours prior to his death.

“The alarm was raised at 5.04pm local time saying a person was lying in an internal patio at Casa Sur,” Crescenti said at the time.

“At 5.11pm an ambulance arrived and the man was certified dead.

“Afterwards we found out he had been a famous singer. Unfortunately the injuries he had suffered as a result of the fall proved to be fatal. There was no possibility of resuscitating him.”

Payne had recently attended a concert of his former bandmate Niall Horan alongside his girlfriend Kate Cassidy, in Argentina with videos of the couple re-circulating online in the hours following his death.

The local Buenos Aires prosecution office, led by prosecutor Andres Esteban and secretary Maria Florencia Lavaggi, has since confirmed to PA they are leading the investigation into Payne’s death.

Payne rose to international fame at the age of 16 after taking part on ITV singing series X Factor, being grouped into the boyband One Direction alongside Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson. The group would go on to enjoy huge levels of worldwide fame, selling over 70 million copies of their albums worldwide.

Tributes to Payne have since been shared by his friends, family and various leading figures in the music industry.

“We are heartbroken. Liam will forever live in our hearts and we’ll remember him for his kind, funny and brave soul,” a statement issued on behalf of his family read.

“We are supporting each other the best we can as a family and ask for privacy and space at this awful time.”
