On the evening of October 9 (US time), with continuous winds of 193km/h and tornadoes, super storm Milton made landfall in Florida, causing heavy rain. According to Reuters, within just 3 hours of making landfall, super storm Milton caused a record rainfall of nearly 230mm, the highest level in over 1,000 years here.

Hurricane Milton made landfall on the Florida coast as a Category 3 storm, spawning tornadoes, tsunamis and the potential for flooding across much of the state. Milton strengthened from the extremely warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, reaching Category 5 strength twice.

Earlier, Alexander Shuvalov, head of the Meteo forecasting center, said that Milton’s speed of 120 mph was “unprecedented”. Based on the complexity of the speed and intensity of the dangerous effects, Milton is predicted to be stronger than Hurricane Katrina, which made landfall in 2005.

Hurricane Milton also caused power outages along Florida’s west coast, but some of the counties with the largest percentage of outages were actually in the central and eastern parts of the state due to the tornado outbreak just outside Milton. The highest number of outages was in Sarasota County, where the storm made landfall.

About two million people across Florida have been ordered to evacuate and millions more are in the projected path of Hurricane Milton, which arrives just two weeks after Helene devastated Florida and other states.
