Having slumbered for 4,000 years, the preserved remains of an exquisite woman in the ancient city of Loulan remain remarkably intact, with her hair even displaying distinct features. This mummy is one among the Tarim mummies uncovered in the Tarim Basin situated in northwestern China within the province of Xinjiang, dating back to 1800 BC. These mummies have been frequently linked to the speakers of the Indo-European Tocharian language, which ultimately became extinct due to assimilation into the Uyghur population by the conclusion of the first millennium AD. It would take an additional millennium before the rediscovery of this forgotten Indo-European language, which occurred at the outset of the 20th century.
Scientists have finally discovered the origins of a group of preserved mummies found in China’s Tarim Basin in the 1990s.
Researchers have determined that these mummies belong to migrants who came to China to share farming practices. It was also determined that these mummies belonged to a group of hunter-gatherers of the Stone Age who lived in Asia about 9,000 years ago. The researchers said the bodies were buried in boat-shaped coffins and wrapped in cattle hides.
“We knew a lot about these people physically, but we knew nothing about who they were and why they were here,” said the head of the research team.
