Marcus Rashford wrote a touching Instagram message to Scott McTominay to say goodbye after the midfielder left Manchester United on deadline day to join Napoli.
For £25.7 million, McTominay sealed his deal to join the Italian giants, ending his 22-year relationship with United.
Before making the first team, McTominay and Rashford both came up through the United school together. Rashford talked about this in his Instagram post on Friday night.
“It’s been a long journey,” Rashford wrote on Instagram next to a picture of himself and McTominay in the gym together as kids, when they were both new to United. Happy travels to Italy, my friend.
Following the news of his move to Napoli, the Scotland star also posted on Instagram, along with a short film of his best United moments, the simple message “Thank you @ManchesterUnited.”
The first time McTominay played for the Red Devils was in 2017. He went on to play 255 games in all categories.
He scored 29 goals and was an important member of the first team for many managers.
In the last few months, with Erik ten Hag in charge, McTominay fell the ranks and decided to move on.
As of now, he has left England to play for Italy under Antonio Conte, who used to coach Chelsea and Tottenham.
Rashford is still with United, but he hasn’t had a great start to the season and wasn’t able to get back into the England team earlier this week.
Alan Shearer also gave him harsh criticism for how he played in United’s 2-1 loss to Brighton last weekend.
But on Friday, Ten Hag jumped to his support, calling Shearer’s analysis “stupid” and criticizing the Match of the Day host’s comments.
As United prepares for Sunday’s big game against Liverpool at Old Trafford, Rashford may be feeling the pressure to keep his spot in the starting lineup.
