FRISCO — The buzz around Dak Prescott and his extension talks with the Dallas Cowboys has returned to the forefront of NFL discussions this week. But comments by the franchise quarterback have suddenly painted a more negative picture in the national narrative.

It appears Prescott and his team have grown weary of these discussions though Jerry Jones has remained content with holding off the matter until a later time. If that remains the case, Prescott could play out the final year of his deal and hit free agency.

That scenario presumes a line of suitors with treasure troves of cash to offer the quarterback, making the opportunity greater for him to take his talents elsewhere. Dallas would then turn to the draft for its next leader under center.

A recent mock draft tabbed University of Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers to the Cowboys at pick No. 23. Would that selection make sense for Dallas?

The quarterback depth in this upcoming class does not compare to that of the 2024 group, but Ewers remains one of the top prospects at the position in the college ranks.

For the current Longhorn, it would be a transition to a significant spotlight to the biggest in professional sports. That would be significant ask for Ewers, whose consistency remains a question despite his ability to attack a defense downfield.

Regardless of his talents or those of any other quarterback that declares for the draft, the best option for the Cowboys sides in extending Prescott through the remainder of his prime years.

There are some negotiation hurdles to overcome and additional challenges on the field, most namely his playoff record. But he is worth the investment for the Cowboys long term and gives them the best chance to compete with the roster at hand.

Losing him and trying to go younger with this incoming class would likely prove a difficult turnaround for the franchise.
