Keely Hodgkinson became the pride of British sports when he won the prestigious gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
Track and field star Keely Hodgkinson brought home Olympic gold for Britain in the women’s 800m on August 5. The athlete, born in 2002, completed the race in 1 minute 56.72 seconds. This is not a world record or a personal best, in fact it is a few seconds slower than Hodgkinson’s time in London two months ago. But it was enough for the 22-year-old girl to fulfill her childhood dream – to become an Olympic champion. During the moment of victory celebration, a spectator from the crowd presented her with a yellow crown and her fans nicknamed her “Queen of British Sports”.

Jess (Jessica Ennis-Hill, former British athlete) is a huge inspiration . She was the reason I got back into the sport all those years ago,” Hodgkinson said.

Hodgkinson is a promising young talent for England. At 16, she became the European Under-18 800m champion and won the British Under-20 championship. Hodgkinson is the first female athlete in history to break the two-minute barrier in the indoor event. At 19, she won a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, breaking the British record set by Kelly Holmes in 1995. Hodgkinson has gone on to win silver medals at several of tournaments, including the 2022 and 2023 World Championships, as well as the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Hodgkinson graduated from Fred Longworth High School in Tyldesley and Loughborough College. She began studying criminology at Leeds Beckett University in 2020 and took a gap year in 2021 due to the pandemic.

Hodgkinson said she had worked hard to win the prestigious gold medal. “I’ve been training so hard for the past few years. I can’t believe I’ve finally done it. I’m an Olympic champion now and no one can take that away from me. I’m so happy to be ability to bring it home.”
