Superhero movies have been enjoying their heyday for a while with blockbusters from two giants, Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Universe. Amid the rapid rise of superhero movies, Jason Statham’s take on the genre is interesting.
While superhero movies have dominated the box office, most often the MCU, several filmmakers and actors have shared their dislike of the genre. Legendary Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Quentin Tarantino, and actors like Amanda Seyfried, Timothée Chalamet, and Statham have publicly shared their rants against the genre.
Many actors and filmmakers are not fond of the genre for their extreme popularity as they claim that these superhero movies have been diminishing mid-budget and independent movies. But for Jason Statham, these movies are easy and any guy could do it, even his grandma would do it with ease. In an interview with i400calci, Statham said:
“A lot of the modern action films I see, like the Marvel Comics sort of things, I just think that any guy could do it. I have no ambition [to star in one]. I could take my grandma, put her in a cape, put her on a green screen, and have stunt doubles come in and do all the action. Anyone can do it. They’re relying on stunt doubles, and green screen, 200 million dollar budgets, all CGI created. To me, it’s not authentic. I’m inspired by old, real star guys that can really do their thing.”
Statham’s dislike for superhero movies is understandable if one looks through his point of view. The actor performs most of the action stunts by himself despite the risks, it’s the adrenaline-rushing factor he might like. And the superhero movies, according to him, don’t test the essence of an action hero.
Jason Statham Will Not Rush to a Theatre To Watch a Superhero Movie
The British actor has established himself as a unique action star, he has appeared in several successful movies including his role in the Fast and Furious franchise. However, his action movies are far too different from the comic book-inspired superhero flicks, at least, he would like to think so. Speaking with Digital Spy, the 56-year-old once revealed that he would not rush to a theatre to watch a superhero movie.
“It’s all about money – kids pay money to go and see them. The fascination is superheroes, it’s what people want to go and see, but you wouldn’t get me rushing to the cinema to see those. I like the old-fashioned type of film,” Statham said.
The actor further revealed that he wasn’t offered any superhero role as well. “They’ve never offered me a part in one of those and I don’t think the shoes would fit,” he said. “Or the cape wouldn’t fit!” he added. So, it is unlikely that fans will get to see him wearing a cape. This might upset the MCU and DCU fans but his stand is valid in his own terms.
