On the morning of February 5 (Vietnam time), the 2024 Grammy Awards took place with the participation of many world-famous stars at Crypto.com Arena, Los Angeles (USA). This is an award announced annually to honor outstanding individuals and music products of the year. 

However, right in the first announced categories, an incident occurred. After the 2024 Grammy announced Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice won Rap Song of the Year, the Organizing Committee hastily changed the announcement and admitted to a mistake.

On the official Grammy Twitter page, they deleted the announcement that Nicki Minaj received the award and changed it to Killer Mike with the song Scientists & Engineers featuring André 3000, Future and Eryn Allen Kane.

Nicki Minaj has been nominated for a Grammy 12 times but has never won. This loss of the female rapper has angered her fans. Currently, the keyword #Scammys (roughly translated as Grammy scam) has become a top trending keyword on Twitter.

Some of Nicki’s fans suspect that the results were rigged. They also expressed dissatisfaction when the 2024 Grammy Awards Organizing Committee has not apologized to Nicki or explained the incident of announcing the wrong award. The female rapper has not responded to the incident. 

The incident reminded fans of the mistaken award and crown at the 2017 Oscars and the 2015 Miss Universe pageant. According to some opinions, this is considered a trick by the Organizing Committee to increase the number of viewers of the program. While others believe that this may just be an unintentional mistake by the Organizing Committee. 

Remember, in 2015, MC Steve Harvey received heavy criticism from the public when he announced the wrong name of the winner of the 2015 Miss Universe pageant. Many people believed that this was a script by the Organizing Committee. The scandal shocked the world and caused the Organizing Committee of the pageant to be criticized for a long time. 

In 2017, the Oscars made a similar mistake when they announced the wrong winner in the most important category – Best Picture . They announced La La Land as the best film of the year but then the real winner was corrected to Moonlight.

Killer Mike, who beat Nicki Minaj for Rap Song of the Year, also had an unexpected incident. Shortly after celebrating his three wins at the 2024 Grammys, he was arrested by police and taken away from the awards ceremony. The reason for Killer Mike’s arrest has not yet been revealed.

The Grammy Awards ceremony took place for the first time in 1959. This is a music award organized by the National Academy of Arts and Sciences of the United States, to honor artists who have made outstanding contributions to the music industry.

The 66th awards ceremony was hosted by comedian Trevor Noah. This year, three new awards were added: Best Pop Dance Performance, Best African Music Performance and Best Alternative Jazz Album.

Leading the nominations this year is female singer SZA with 9 nominations, followed by names like Victoria Monét, Phoebe Bridgers, Serban Ghenea with 7 nominations each. 

Monét’s 2-year-old daughter, Hazel, became the youngest artist nominated in Grammy history when she collaborated with her mother on the song that received a nomination for Best Traditional R&B Performance – Hollywood. 

The 2024 Grammy Awards are set to be a season that celebrates women after years of ignoring female artists. Many of this year’s major categories focus on women, with talented female stars such as Taylor Swift, SZA, and Olivia Rodrigo. 

In the most prestigious categories of interest such as Album of the Year or Song of the Year, out of the 8 nominees, 7 works belong to female artists. At the same time, according to the statistical list of artists nominated the most at the 2024 Grammy, women also account for 3/4.

“Female pop stars are not only dominating the red carpet, they’re also dominating the conversation at the Grammys,” says Kristin Lieb, a professor of entertainment marketing, music, and gender. “This is a significant shift. They’re increasingly judged on their talent and charisma rather than their looks or outfits.”
