Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that a new offer has been made for Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood, while other reports claim Atletico Madrid are considering signing the player.
is Marseille’s top transfer target
Greenwood’s loan spell at Getafe has come to an end, although it is unlikely he will continue his United career in the 2024/25 season. Jim Ratcliffe has decided to sell the former England international , knowing that it will be difficult for him to regain his place in the Red Devils’ squad. In addition, selling Greenwood would help United’s finances.
Lazio were the first club to bid for Greenwood but were unwilling to pay more than £17m, leaving the Serie A outfit behind Marseille in the transfer chase. Last week, it was reported that Marseille had made a better offer for the 22-year-old striker. However, that figure fell short of United’s £30m asking price, and according to Romano, the Ligue 1 side have now returned with a new formal offer.
Romano did not reveal exactly how much the new offer was worth, although it is certain to be closer to £30m than the previous offer. Marseille are keen to complete the signing of Greenwood, with Romano adding that the 22-year-old is their main transfer target. A deal between the two parties is also “close”, according to Romano.
The 22-year-old striker is eager to leave MU.
Ideally, United would like to receive £30m for their academy graduate, but the Red Devils have not ruled out a loan deal with Marseille with an obligation to buy next summer. United are also hoping to insert a buy-back clause into Greenwood’s next deal, allowing them to claim a portion of the transfer fee.
Meanwhile, reports in Spain suggest that Atletico Madrid are ready to join the race for Greenwood. However, Atletico will need to act quickly to keep the youngster in La Liga as Marseille move closer to completing his signing.
Greenwood will be delighted with Marseille, Lazio and Atleti all showing an interest in signing him. It was reported on Sunday that the player was growing “impatient” with his future still unresolved. Greenwood has told Ratcliffe and other United officials that he wants to join a new club by the weekend, with Marseille now the most likely destination.
