Former trainer Ben Davison gave the “key to success” to Tyson Fury in his rematch with Usyk – VC

Ben Davison was as close to Tyson Fury as anyone for a few years and has now made his prediction as to what might happen when ‘The Gypsy King’ rematches Oleksandr Usyk.

Davison was an up-and-coming coach when he emerged on the scene in the corner of Fury. He was credited with helping him lose huge amounts of weight following a long time out of the ring and battles with mental health problems after his win over Wladimir Klitschko.

After successful comeback fights against the likes of Sefer Seferi and Francesco Pianeta, he lead him into battle in the first of three fights with Deontay Wilder. Fury was unlucky to be given a draw rather than a win following a late 12th round knockdown from the American which he famously rose from with barely a second to spare, only to go on to dominate the rest of the final round.

The two parted ways after Fury fought through a brutal cut against Otto Wallin in his next bout. The Morecambe man then teamed up with SugarHill Steward for his second Wilder bout – a knockout win.

Speaking to iFL TV, Davison spoke on the first encounter and said that the man who can prepare thoroughly and make adjustments in realtime will win the rematch.

“Yeah it was a very competitive fight. I thought there would be ebbs and flows and there was that and I think there will be that again. I don’t think a pattern will emerge in that fight and it will stay the same. Both fighters are good enough to make adjustments. I think preparation is key, who can make those adjustments, who can recognise the things that are happening and make the adjustments to get back in control of the fight.

The reason those fights are so big and so intriguing is we’re not 100% on how the fight will go. The first fight didn’t solidify anything and we’re still intrigued to see the second fight as well.”

Usyk recently had to vacate the IBF belt so the rematch on December 21 will no longer be for the undisputed title.
