The auction house Spink (UK) successfully auctioned an ancient gold coin, dating back around 2,100 years, for $24,720 (approximately 610 million VND).

This rare gold coin was discovered using a metal detector in March 2023 in Hampshire, England. According to archaeologists, the gold coin was minted by a pre-Roman ruler named Esunertos in Britain.

The gold coin features the Latin inscription “Esunertos,” which translates to “strong as the god Esos.” However, the inscription on the coin is in Gaulish—a language used in the region at the time—according to John Sills, an archaeologist at the Institute of Archaeology, University of Oxford (UK).

The coin dates back to around 50 BC, a period shortly after Julius Caesar invaded Britain twice around 55 BC, John Sills told Livescience.

This coin is one of only three known to bear the name Esunertos. All three coins were found in the same area, possibly a territory controlled by Esunertos.

Ian Leins, collections and interiors manager at English Heritage, a charity managing the UK’s historic sites, stated, “If an individual accumulates enough power and wealth to expand their influence, issuing coins is a way for them to further extend their reach.”
