The Portuguese star played last night as Manchester United secured their Champions League spot for the upcoming campaign.

During the encounter, Fernandes, 28, scored from the penalty spot after Wesley Fofana had pulled him down in the box.

Jadon Sancho had set him up for success earlier in the game, but the offensive midfielder also hit the crossbar.

Fernandes described United’s participation in the Champions League, which they lost out on last season, as an “obligation” following yesterday night’s game.

It’s not a relief, he stated. Everyone knew, I believe, how crucial it was for us to place in the top four.

“I believe that everyone was genuinely sure that we would succeed at the same time.

“We ought to have done this a little bit sooner in the season, but the most crucial thing is that we won tonight. We had those two away games where we failed to score any points, which affected our totals.

“It’s kind of an obligation for this club to be in these positions.”

Man United’s Premier League campaign comes to an end on Sunday when they host Fulham at home.

A victory would guarantee third position, while a loss or draw would allow Newcastle to pass them.

The Red Devils’ focus will next shift to the FA Cup final on June 3 when they play Manchester City, their rivals, under the Wembley arch.
